Trinity Academy Culture: In the Classroom
The Greek origin of the word Academy refers to the garden where Plato taught his students. On the beautiful Greenlawn campus, Trinity Academy South Bend is dedicated to creating and sustaining a similar culture of distinguished learning and excellence that began so long ago. In every classroom and gathering space, faculty and students engage in an intentional exploration of reality and of ideas. At the core of its culture, Trinity Academy emphasizes the pursuit of the truth, recognition of the good, and the creation of beauty. Moreover, in the spirit of rich collaboration for the common good, students, faculty and staff, and families work together to cultivate and support this noble endeavor.
Students are known by their teachers and free to engage in intellectual pursuits in a supportive and nurturing environment where no question is dismissed, hard work is deeply valued and nurtured, and mutual respect and care for every individual, as well as the whole community, is paramount. The freedom that students experience to engage and explore, to be vulnerable and valued is unique in the competitive and dismissive culture of modernity. The safe space, much like Plato’s garden classroom, promises that each student will have the opportunity to rise to their potential.
The result of the Trinity Academy culture is clearly visible in the students. Their days are marked by serious effort, inclusive relationships, and a joy that reflects the Academy’s commitment to Christian values.
Trinity Academy Culture: Beyond The Classroom
While the Trinity Academy experience is academically rigorous, it is equally rooted in joy and meaningful relationships. This sense of connection extends well beyond the classroom, offering students a rich and balanced life filled with sports, social events, extracurricular activities, clubs, and lasting friendships. Trinity Academy students are encouraged to participate in a variety of regular social events, including the annual Luau Party, class gatherings, travel opportunities, ballroom dancing, daddy daughter dances, clubs, sports, and an upperclassmen formal dance. With time spent together in class and a wide range of social opportunities, it’s no surprise that Trinity alumni are known for maintaining lifelong friendships—an aspect many consider one of the most valuable parts of their Trinity experience.
“A Trinity education fosters an environment where deep and lasting relationships can flourish. Spending seven years together—engaging in rich classroom discussions and participating in activities such as sports and clubs—creates a bond that feels distinctly different from the average high school experience. In my own life, Trinity has had a profound impact: I met my future husband there, my best friend to this day was my classmate, and now, my husband and I employ four Trinity alumni in our family business. What’s even more remarkable is that when I meet a fellow Trinity graduate, even one with whom I didn’t overlap during my time at school, there is an instant, unspoken connection—a bond that is truly unique.” -Vanessa Cooreman Smith, Class of 2000
